This is not normal.
This is no time for normal.
This is a time for standing up and looking each other in the eye.

SETTING FIRES is a demonstration in both meanings of the word: an act of resolute noncompliance and an embodied example of how we can be. It’s a simultaneous commitment to resistance and transcendence, unfolding radical challenges through gentle embrace and calm, firm stance. In a twilight zone of cascading American carnage, we embrace darkness as a communal refuge, a safe house, a place for power to coalesce.

SETTING FIRES is a collaboration between Control Group Productions and Wild Heart Dance. It features new ensemble works by each company and a collaborative duet by artistic directors Kat Gurley and Patrick Mueller.

ABOUT THE WORKS

SETTING FIRES by Control Group Productions.
The fifth work in Control Group’s dances made to be viewed in the dark series, SETTING FIRES conjures darkness as a communal space of connection and strength. It examines subcultures and congregations long relegated to the darkness, from religious radicals to drag, trans, and vogue ball cultures. Through acts of resistance, reiterating the recognition that THIS IS NOT NORMAL, we seek invisible acts of communion, and the collaborative creation of momentary, miniature utopias.

The Beloved by Wild Heart Dance.
The dancers of Wild Heart, choreographer Kat Gurley, and composer Kendall Perry come together this April for their second collaborative production. The Beloved calls to us with a warm breeze and heralds as loudly as the drums that dance our feet. Here there is a lifetime of music to be written and praises to be danced. The Beloved is waiting: pulling us into this very moment and toward our truest potential. All we have to do is say,”YES”.
